Posted: 3:17 pm on 19th November 2014

The Australian Research Council (ARC) recently released details of their funding for Discovery Projects. The University of Sydney scored big. Funding included $100,869 over three years for one researcher to produce ‘a comparative cultural history of time,’ and to consider how ‘temporality’ has been represented in literature from the Middle Ages to the present. Another researcher was awarded a massive $179,700 over three years to ponder the ‘political and religious…

More fun from the Australian Research Council!

Posted: 11:05 am on 19th November 2013

The Australian Research Council is a favourite hunting-ground for WasteWatch. A $350,000 trip to the South Pacific, and a $330,000 theme park project are some of the ARC’s past WasteWatch highlights. More recently, the ARC came in for criticism just before the recent federal election, as the Coalition promised to scrap some weird and wonderful projects, and redirect the funding. We have previously brought you news of one…

WasteWatch has already brought you news of how Tony Burke, our Minister for the Arts, must have gotten bored with the games selection on his iPhone. Now it seems his colleague Senator Kim Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science, Research, and Higher Education, must be bored with the rides available at theme parks around the country. Through the Australian Research Council,…

$350k for taxpayer funded South Pacific research trip

Posted: 11:09 am on 24th April 2013

One area WasteWatch will be exploring with interest are Australian Research Council (ARC) grants for our academics. The ARC is supposed to fund research that is going to deliver ‘cultural, economic, social and environmental benefits to all Australians’ but a number of projects have left us scratching our heads. One grant we found is to send an archeologist to the South Pacific island of Vanuatu (at a cost of $350,000…
