980 pages of excuses

Posted: 1:58 pm on 31st March 2015

Anyone who’s ever done renovations knows the feeling. “Why is it not finished yet? You said it would be done two months ago.” The possible reasons are endless: bad weather, the plumber hasn’t finished his bit yet, the  supplier ran out of material, my mate’s girlfriend’s babysitter is getting married, the moon is in  Aries, and so on and so forth. Our Prime Minister’s experience is no different, it seems. Renovations to the Lodge are…

Some serious retail therapy

Posted: 1:56 pm on 30th March 2015

Maybe it’s because Anthony Albanese’s been etching his opposition to data retention laws into the backs of all the chairs, just to make sure EVERYBODY knows it. Or maybe it’s because Tony Abbott’s onion breath has finally become too strong. Or maybe it’s just because of all the (policy) back-flips going on. Taxpayer-funded travel in Tasmania

Posted: 10:25 am on 3rd June 2014

Last year, we brought you some of our favourite report excerpts here. This latest edition, which covers January…

230 TVs for the Senate

Posted: 10:33 am on 16th October 2013

WasteWatch has previously told you how much you’re paying for public servants’ Foxtel subscriptions. Now it turns out you’re buying them TVs too. The Department of the Senate has recently signed an $80 000 contract with Sony Australia for the provision of two hundred and thirty 32-inch TVs. Yes, dear reader, you read that right. Two hundred and thirty. One way of picturing that is each Senator could have three…

Senator Brandis and his library

Posted: 4:06 pm on 2nd October 2013

Senator George Brandis has come under fire in recent days for his use of his ‘publications entitlement’. In particular, The Australian newspaper ran a piece detailing the $13 000 of taxpayer money Senator Brandis spent on his library over the last four years, and listed all the books he had bought. Were these purchases a misuse of the entitlement? According to the Parliamentary Entitlements Act 1990, parliamentarians have around $5000…
