periodic coffee tableA few months ago, WasteWatch brought you news of the interior decorating craze sweeping the corridors of our federal Parliament.

Now it seems the old Department of Industry, Innovation, Climate Change, Science, Research, Tertiary Education, and whatever else former minister Senator Kim Carr decided he was interested in, felt a bit left out, and wanted to get in on the action.

So they used some of your money (to wit, $14,000) to buy a Periodic coffee table.

No, no, not a periodic coffee table, dear reader. What would be the point of that? Every desk in every office is periodically a coffee table.

No, the Department bought a Periodic coffee table. See the difference?

The Department spent $14,000 of your money buying a table from UK-based company RGB Research that has samples of every single element of the periodic table encased in acrylic, in the middle of the thick, burred oak, tabletop, so musing public servants waiting for their coffee to brew can ponder the infinite varieties of structures that can flow from such prosaic little pieces of stuff, and appreciate the incredible vision of Dmitri Mendeleev, who successfully predicted properties of then-unknown elements, when he first formulated his Periodic Law in 1869.

Perhaps the glorious coffee table will inspire the Department to write reports and organise meetings for as-yet-undreamt-of government programs.

Perhaps it will remind the Department that the vast edifice of stable and peaceful Western society is erected on prosaic little pieces of administrative work, done by each and every public servant across the country.

Or perhaps it’s just a waste of taxpayer money.

What do you think?
